News and Updates from the Hilliard for NC Senate Campaign -

Greetings Concerned Citizen,
Over the coming months we will be updating this space as often as possible with news and updates about the issues that matter to you, and the progress of our campaign to elect new leadership in the 23rd District.

As always please feel free to contact the campaign anytime.  We welcome your questions, comments, and support as we fight to bring responsible, common sense leadership back to state government.

Hilliard for NC Senate won Person County, but lost Orange County by enough votes to make Ellie Kinnaird the winner. We congratulate Senator Kinnaird on her victory.

Though we were not victorious, we accomplished many good things, including spreading the message of freedom and limited government. We will continue to fight for these values as private citizens, and cherish the memories from a wonderful campaign experience.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

The Time for Choosing a Better Direction for Our State is Here!

North Carolina's state spending has increased 40% in the last 8 years
North Carolina has the highest taxes in the Southeast
North Carolina has a projected 3 to 4 billion dollar budget deficit for 2011

It is time for a new voice representing the people of Orange and Person Counties who will work to lower taxes and eliminate wasteful spending.  We need to get our state economy back on track and get North Carolina back to work.  We need leaders who understand how to help grow the private sector and empower individuals, not grow an already too big government even bigger at the expense of taxpayers and jobs.

Early voting is going on now and ends October 30th.  Election day is November 2nd.  Vote Hilliard for NC Senate for common sense solutions to our state's growing problems.

Richard Burr, United States Senator for North Carolina, endorses Ryan

Richard says, "Ryan Hilliard understands that we need accountability in state government.  He will work hard for the citizens of Orange and Persons Counties in the North Carolina State Senate.  Ryan knows that big government is not the answer.  He will fight to create an economic climate which encourages small business development and job creation, and will protect our individual liberties like the 2nd Amendment.  I am glad to endorse Ryan Hilliard for the State Senate." Senator Richard Burr

NRA Gives Ryan an "A(Q)", Current State Senator an "F" Rating on Protecting the 2nd Amendment.

You might like to know Ryan received a rating of "AQ" from the NRA, the highest rating a non-incumbent can receive. Our current State Senator received an "F" rating, the lowest score you can receive.  The NRA says an "F" rating means this person is a "True enemy of gun owners' rights".

Please go to the link below to see the State Senate 23 ratings as well as all the ratings in North Carolina.  Some of the scores might surprise you a little. "The NRA relies on a very simple premise: when provided with the facts, the nation's elected officials will recognize that "gun control" schemes are an infringement on the Second Amendment and a proven failure in fighting crime. The importance of this premise lies in the knowledge that, as one U.S. Congressman put it: "The gun lobby is people."

Ryan strongly supports the 2nd amendment as this rating shows, along with all our individual liberties.  It is long overdue we elect leaders who work to defend our rights, not erode them.  Less government equals more freedom.  It is just that simple.

Please help us fight for our individual freedoms next year in Raleigh!  Also, please spread the word to friends and family who value their right to bear arms.

100 Days that Will Change North Carolina

North Carolina's state government must reduce costs and regulation on business, large and small, so that they can create jobs and prosperity.  If the people of North Carolina entrust Republicans with a majority in the General Assembly on November 2, 2010, we commit to govern the State by focusing on these priorities:

1. Years of overspending by Democrats have given North Carolina the highest tax rates in the Southeast and a budget deficit of at least $3 billion; we will balance the State budget without raising tax rates.

2. High taxes are killing jobs.  We will make our tax rates competitive with other states.

Within the first 100 days you will see us:

3. Passing The Healthcare Freedom Protection Act, exempting North Carolinians from the job-killing, liberty-restricting mandates of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obama Care).

4. Fighting to protect jobs by keeping our Right to Work laws.

5. Reducing the regulatory burden on small business.

6. Funding education in the classroom, not the bureaucracy.

7.Eliminating the cap on charter schools.

8. Passing the Honest Election Act, requiring a valid photo ID to vote.

9. Passing the Eminent Domain constitutional amendment to protect private property rights.

10. Ending pay-to-play politics and restore honesty and integrity to state government.

Hilliard responds to Town Hall Meeting

The campaign appearance Tuesday evening by my opponent highlighted the apparent disconnect to the real economic issues facing North Carolina and the citizens of the 23rd District. Our current leaders in the General Assembly, supported by my opponent, can't seem to understand government does not create jobs, the private sector does. Eliminating wasteful spending, removing burdensome regulations, and cutting taxes would help the budget woes, the economy, and the job market in North Carolina. A rising tide raises all ships.

However, doing this just doesn't fit the liberal agenda of our current State Senator and the leadership in Raleigh. Consequently North Carolina continues to be at a competitive disadvantage compared to neighboring states and foreign competition. The result is our citizens struggle to make ends meet and find good jobs.

North Carolina is facing the biggest budget deficit in the Southeast next year even though we already have the highest tax burden in the Southeast. If this sounds like a good direction to you then re-elect our current State Senator. However, if you want a new, common sense voice in state government please support the Hilliard for NC Senate campaign.

Together we can make a difference in 2010.

Cordially,

Ryan A. Hilliard

Update From the Campaign Trail

I was speaking recently to the leader of a local advocacy group (who shall remain nameless).  This person expressed some of their concerns to me, and asked what my plans are to tackle these issues.  When I explained in detail that our state and our nation have mistakenly looked to government to regulate and manage areas of life it simply is not capable of handling, the reaction I received was luke warm.  "It can't be that simple" was what I heard when I further explained that returning to a limited, constitutional government whereby government only performed its intended functions would allow North Carolina to once again prosper while at the same time vastly improving various areas of life and protecting individual liberties.  It really is that simple.

The conversation lasted over an hour, and by the end this person was recommending people to visit who may be able to help our campaign.  Was this because we agreed on every issue?  No, of course this wasn't the case.  This person described themselves not as red or blue, but as "purple".  What transpired over that hour was an understanding that like her I was not beholden to one political party, and that what the 23rd District, the state of North Carolina, and the USA need is new leadership that will attack our current probelms with a fresh perspective, insteading of relying on the failed philosphy of big government being the answer to all our problems.

Citizens of North Carolina, the state budget has grown 40% in the last 8 years, our tax rates are the highest in the Southeast, next year our state faces a 3 to 4 billion dollar deficit, and our individual rights are under constant attack.  If this sounds good to you then continue to support the current liberal direction our state is headed and the current liberal leadership.  If, however, like the person I mentioned above you see the current situation as the wrong direction then join us in the effort to elect new, independent-minded leadership who will work to reign in wasteful spending, high taxes, anti-jobs and anti-business regulation, the growth of government, and protect our individual liberties like private property rights and the right to bear arms.

Together we can make some very positive changes in 2010.  Now is the time to get involved and make a difference...

North Carolina can't afford more wasteful spending, corruption, anti-business and anti-job policies, high taxes, and politicians who don't respect the Constitution and our individual liberties. Please take a few moments to visit the Hilliard for NC Senate contribution link and make a contribution to help us spread the message. This year, we can stop out of control government together! Thank you for your support.

VP Joe Biden visited Chapel Hill last night - liberals and comedians rejoice!

Vice President Joe Biden visited Chapel Hill last night, stopping traffic and wasting tax dollars to raise money for Democrats.  Supposedly it cost $500 to see what funny things he might say and curse words he might use.

Working for all the citizens in Orange and Person Counties

One of the many issues our campaign will be highlighting in the upcoming election is our express desire to see a Senator elected who will represent all of the people in Orange and Person Counties, not play favorites or advocate for certain towns or certain groups of people.

Our opponent in the 23rd District Senate race recently commented that a possible way to solve the Highway Patrol corruption issue would be to appoint more females.  This rationale fails to acknowledge the fact that the current head of the Highway Patrol was appointed by Governor Beverly Perdue, a female.  Our take is simple: regardless of gender, race, or any other extraneous factor let's find the best person for the job based on merit and merit alone.

Moreover, in 2007 our opponent was ready to retire from the State Senate, but decided to run again.  Was this because no one else was willing to run for the seat? No, in fact three Democrats, all of which held elected office in Orange County, made their intentions known they would be seeking the seat.  Our opponent changed her mind because there was not a woman willing to run, even though according to reports she had recruited nine potential women to replace her.  What Ryan will do: Support and work for all genders; not play favorites.  True equality comes not from advocating for one gender or group over another, but protecting the freedoms of and working for all citizens with equal vigor.  The Hilliard for NC Senate campaign manager happens to be female, and we couldn't imagine a better person for the job.  Gender had nothing to do with it.  Isn't that the way it should be?

Another time we'll delve into representing all of Orange and Person Counties and not just certain areas...
